A TEACHERble Moment on Black History

In celebration of Black History Month, I wanted to share a poem I wrote to highlight some amazing but often forgotten individuals. We all love Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, and Rosa Parks, but there are so many more incredible people in Black history who deserve our attention.

Here is my “teacherble moment” on Black History through a poetic tribute.

To Be Blessed and Black

To be blessed and black,
Let’s take a step back,
And a moment to reflect on African-Americans &
Their accomplishments.

So pay attention,
As I mention,
These inventors and their inventions.
And maybe you’ll leave here today knowing that
It is the greatest compliment to be blessed and black.

To be blessed and black,
Let’s take a step back,
And a moment to acknowledge Osbourn Dorsey.
We all know God can open doors, but Dorsey is responsible for that too.
At 16 years old,
He invented the door knob.

To be blessed and black,
Let’s take a step back,
Literally.

And acknowledge William A. Dietz.
We all know God orders our steps,
But Dietz re-designed women shoes to make them more comfortable.

To be blessed and black,
Let’s take a step back,
And a moment to acknowledge most of our favorite snack.
We all know Jesus turned water into wine,
But George Speck played a part in turning potatoes into potatoes chips.

To be blessed and black,
Let’s take a step back,
And a moment to acknowledge Mary Van Brittan Brown.
We all know God’s word gives us security because it is so strong,
But Mary created the security system we use in monitoring our home.

To be blessed and black,
Let's take a step forward,
In honoring all African-Americans have achieved.

For being blessed and being black
Is one of the greatest inventions I believe.
